Emma Simmons

Tutor for Struggling Readers

About me

Literacy tutor

I am a Reading Interventionist and Learning Specialist.  My teaching is based on the latest research in Structured Literacy.

I offer online lessons for 6 to 12-year-olds who are struggling with reading and writing.

I was a classroom teacher and then worked for many years as a learning specialist and reading support teacher in a school setting.  I also have four children of my own!

I am patient, experienced and flexible.

Qualifications

- Elementary School Teacher with a Quebec teaching diploma - BA with Distinction in Early Childhood Education

- Orton-Gillingham Associate in training, specifically for dyslexic students

-LETRS trained - Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling course.

Research shows that in many cases, ongoing reading difficulties can be prevented through personalised one-to-one instruction with a Structured Literacy  approach. My goal for children is to give intensive remediation - before the gap is too large - and before the child’s self-esteem suffers if they fall further behind their peers.  My lessons are effective and motivating, making reading a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

If you have questions about your child's reading, please get in touch.

It takes four times longer to intervene in 4th grade than in 1st grade.

The longer we wait to identify a child that struggles to read, the more intervention, time, money and remediation is needed, not to mention the impact that waiting may have on self esteem and mental health.

Early identification of reading difficulties and evidence based structured literacy intervention is essential.

Don’t leave reading to chance!

Don’t wait. Close the gap.
